Coach Covey baseball & softball Instruction

Small-Group Lessons & Clinics

Background

My name is Tim Covey & I am an instructor based out of Clermont, FL. Following my time as a college baseball player, I coached both fastpitch softball & baseball at the high school & college levels from 2001-2017. I also worked in education as a Teacher, Administrator, & College Advisor throughout that time.

During my high school & college coaching tenure, I accepted head coaching positions at various struggling programs. In each scenario, our coaching staff and players were able to turn the programs around while breaking numerous school records & winning multiple championships along the way.

In 2017, I stepped back from coaching to spend more time with my young family & grow my company, Covey Enterprises, which consists of multiple business ventures & is now my full-time work.

Since that time, I have remained involved in the game by coaching my son’s youth baseball teams & by providing player instruction on the side. I have been married to my wife, Tracy, for 18+ years. We have three kids all involved in various activities.

Coaching philosophy

Coaching baseball & softball is a passion of mine that continues to this day. I truly believe that youth sports & coaches can have an enormous impact on the lives of youth (when done properly).

Unfortunately, youth sports can also have a negative impact when things get out of perspective.

In all of my instruction, there is a major emphasis on proper fundamentals. Having been a head coach at all levels, from rec league to college, this is an area that is often underemphasized. The goal of my instruction is to help offset that for the players I teach.

SMALL-GROUP LESSONS OVERVIEW

Here is a brief overview of how I typically run my lessons (some exceptions may apply):

  • Prayer: I am a Christian, & my faith greatly influences my approach to coaching & working with kids. One such way is that each lesson will begin with a short prayer to get things started. Please know that your child does not need to be a believer to attend & in no way will I put attendees on the spot or make them feel uncomfortable.

  • Small-Group: Each lesson will have 6 players maximum in order to maximize the reps for each player.

  • 4-Week Sessions: Lessons are typically organized as 1x/week with a 4-week minimum commitment. This helps to ensure that we can reinforce things from the prior week & teach more advanced fundamentals by the 4th week.

  • Lesson Length: Each lesson will typically last 90-120 minutes.

  • Multi-Skill Focus: Each lesson will focus on the “BIG 4” areas of hitting, infield, outfield, & catching. While some lessons may focus on certain areas more than others, we will cover aspects of all areas
    • Note: Catcher fundamentals will be done last, so that those not interested in catching can leave early.

  • Fast-Paced: I do everything I can to minimize standing around. As such, it is always my goal to keep the lesson fast-paced with lots of repetitions, in order to help each player get better!

  • Instructional: You will notice that instruction will be happening throughout the lesson. I believe that practice is only meaningful if it’s “with a purpose.” A coach’s job is to help each player know how to make this happen!
